When it comes to respiratory protection, a tight seal can mean the difference between safety and serious exposure. Whether you’re dealing with dust, fumes, mists, or other airborne hazards, a properly sealed respirator is your first line of defense. That’s why taking just one minute to perform a fit check every time you wear your respirator is so important.
What Is a Respirator Fit Check?
A fit check, also called a user seal check, is a quick, simple procedure that verifies your respirator is sealing properly to your face each time you put it on. It helps ensure your equipment is working as it should before you enter a hazardous environment.
Here’s how to do it:
- Put on your respirator and adjust the straps.
- Cover the filters or exhalation valve with your hands.
- Inhale and hold your breath.
- Feel for any air leaks around the seal.
- Exhale gently and check again.
If air leaks in or out, adjust the respirator and repeat the process until a good seal is achieved.
Why Is a Fit Check Important?
Even the best respirator won’t protect you if it doesn’t fit properly. Gaps in the seal allow airborne contaminants to enter your breathing zone, reducing the effectiveness of the respirator and putting your health at risk. A daily fit check ensures the mask fits your face securely, because even small changes in how you put it on can affect the seal.
What About a Fit Test?
It’s important not to confuse a fit check with a fit test.
A fit test is a formal, OSHA-required procedure that confirms whether a specific make, model, and size of respirator is appropriate for you. Fit tests are conducted:
- Annually
- Whenever you switch respirator models or sizes
- If you have significant facial changes (e.g., weight loss, dental work, facial surgery, or scarring)
There are two types of fit tests:
- Qualitative Fit Test (QLFT): Uses your sense of taste or smell (e.g., Bitrex or saccharin) to detect leaks.
- Quantitative Fit Test (QNFT): Uses an instrument to measure actual leakage and provide a numerical fit factor.
A fit test must be passed before you’re allowed to wear a tight-fitting respirator on the job. But passing it once doesn’t guarantee your mask fits every day, that’s where the daily fit check comes in.
➡️ Medical Clearance Requirement is an Important safety requirement for respirator use. Click here to find additional information! ⬅️
Before any employee is permitted to wear a respirator as part of their job, they must first undergo medical clearance. This step is required prior to fit testing and ensures the individual is physically capable of safely using a respirator.
- Voluntary use of respirators does not fall under the same enforcement rules.
- 3M offers a medical evaluation/clearance service that can be used regardless of the respirator brand purchased. . 3M Online Medical Respirator Evaluation
- If any concerns arise during the evaluation, 3M may refer the individual for further testing, such as a pulmonary function test.
This proactive step helps ensure both compliance and the health and safety of your team.
How Often Should You Do a Fit Check?
Every time you wear your respirator.
It only takes a minute—and it could protect you from hours, days, or even years of harmful exposure.

Bottom Line
A daily fit check is a fast, essential habit that can make a life-saving difference. Don’t skip it. Don’t rush it. And don’t assume your mask is good to go just because it passed a fit test months ago.
Your lungs are counting on you to get it right, every time.
